A 4-1 defeat last night against Everton in the Senior Cup Final brought an end to what’s been remarkable run of winning form and also brought the curtains down on a historic season for the club.
We got off to a flying start scoring after one minute with a wayward Jesse Dowling shot finding Elliot Hughes who tapped in from close range.
We were looking good and creating chances, but a blow came thirty plus minutes in when Tom Mitchell took a bad tackle and was forced off, and it’s fair to say that disrupted us at the back and on the stroke of halt time Everton got a goal back and for me, it was harsh on the lads.
HT 1-1
It’s got even harsher on the lads as within a minute of the second half we found ourselves behind, Jesse Dowling making a good challenge seen the ball find a blue shirt and with the left back floating one over the head of Jordan Barrow it was a easy finish for the frontman.
We rallied and went back at them, but a few shots were blocked, and another sucker punch came via another close range finish.
Once again the lads gave their all to get back in the game with Tom Croughan & Tom Douglas having glorious chances, but it wasn’t to be, and after we went gung ho late on Everton grabbed a fourth to wrap the game up.
FT 1-4
A very harsh scoreline on the night and the lads were the better side for forty plus minutes in that first half, but fitness told and with us coming in on the back of a weekend of pressure, relief, emotion and a few days on the booze to celebrate we were always going to be up against it against a young full-time Everton side who, and they showed there qualities in the end.
We didn’t give a man of the match last night as we think all the lads deserve the accolades for the shifts they have put in as I say on the back of not only a grueling few months but a crazy weekend.
Yet again we were backed by the most loyal away following any non league club could wish for, great numbers and vocal once again and non more than at full-time when we needed it most.
Now it’s time to sit back and take in what we have achieved this season, fair to say it’s not sunk in and it probably won’t till we get the league table with all the new clubs we will soon be meeting.
The hard work won’t stop behind the scenes as we look to ramp up the improvements to the facilities at the Anny over the coming months working towards the March 26 deadline.
Who can’t wait to go again.
